Fenris was not pleased with this. He was not pleased at all. In fact, he'd really rather be anywhere but here - which he would be if not for Hawke. She seemed to be under the impression that he needed to apologize to the brat, which is how he ended up glaring resentfully at the staircase of the Hanged Man with the rogue standing calmly beside him, chattering about Varric's latest story.

"Where is that child? You said he would be here." Clearly, Fenris was not starting this with a full serving of patience.

"Give it a few more minutes. He's bound to come down sometime," Hawke replied in her best don't-lose-your-patience-or-I'll-drag-you-out-of-here-by-your-pointy-ears voice.

And Pan just ignored him. Reading.

And Fenris ignored him in turn, looking at the common room at large. That is, until Hawke sauntered up and tried to facilitate things.

"Pan? Fenris has something he'd like to say. Don't you, Fenris?" Hawke gave the elf a pointed look.

"Liking has nothing to do with it. You of all people should know that," he groused.

"Happy to." Fenris tried to make his escape, but Aisling nabbed him before he could (making certain not to touch any of the lyrium markings because she realized from what he'd mentioned in the past that that hurt).

"No, not until you both make up." She was using the tone of voice that indicated she would brook no argument...

Fenris tried anyway. "I've done nothing wrong."

"Why would I want to forgive him? Leave me alone." Pan didn't look up from his book.

So much for brooking no argument.

"You're going to have to spend time around each other now and then, so it might as well be tolerable," Hawke said firmly. "Now both of you apologize so we can drop this mess. Maker, when I'm the one who has to be mature, there's something terribly wrong with the world." She didn't like this at all. Sebastian wasn't even here and she was still having to play babysitter.

Fenris looked at Pan to see if he intended to do as Aisling said. He was silent, though, refusing to be the first one to speak up.

"You underestimate me. I just called him out on being an insufferable asshole. I'm shameless and very stubborn. Give up, leave me be."

I know. He won't notice the difference

"I guarantee I can be just as stubborn as either of you," Hawke said, folding her arms. "And if it doesn't happen now, I'll bring in outside help. For instance, I might ask for Anders to come and convince you since you seem to listen to him, but I'm sure you don't want me bothering him over something as small as this." She was a rogue. Coercion came with the territory.

"I was being insufferable, was I? As I recall, I didn't stoop to spitting. I simply called the mage exactly what he is - an abomination." The elf had a headache already, and it was getting worse by the moment - probably because of this exercise in futility. He had done literally nothing wrong in his reckoning, so this was entirely unnecessary. "He's possessed. Even someone such as you should have figured that out by now."

Hawke shot Fenris a look. "Not helping."

Pan finally looked up at her. "Aren't you his friend? Why do you let people say things like that, in front of him even? Why am I getting chided for doing what you should have?"

Back to the book.

"Fuck off, both of you."

"I don't know about you, Hawke, but I've had about enough of this brat. You know where to find me." And with that, Fenris did indeed fuck off.

"Maker," Aisling sighed. "Look, I'm just trying to avoid bouts of kneebiting from cropping up in the future. I've had that talk with Fenris already - several times, in fact. And I can hardly be faulted for not speaking up when you jumped in before I could so much as take a breath. I wouldn't ask Anders to deal with Fenris at all if it weren't completely necessary, but he's the best healer I've ever met, and that includes my sister. Without him, there's a good chance that some of the people I take along won't survive. I refuse to have that on my conscience."

She didn't want an apology from either of them, honestly. What she wanted was a ceasefire, however tenuous. This scheme had been an attempt to force one - though it wasn't well thought out, she had to admit. But maybe Pan would at least see reason. If not, well... She would think of something else.

"Yet here you are, telling me I did something wrong in defending him, and that I shouldn't do it again. Your sister is a mage, and you're still making Anders be around someone who says tranquility is justified? Some friend you are. Why won't you leave me alone already?"

"Did I say wrong? No. I said apologize. And the reason for that is because Fenris can be a stubborn tit who won't let anything go. He's also the most effective warrior I know, which is why I bring him with me when I know there are enemies I can't handle. Which is also why I ask Anders to come along, so we all survive. I don't make him come, I ask him. I don't try to force him. Clearly, he thinks he can change Fenris's mind, and I hope to the Maker he's right." She was beginning to sound exasperated, and with good reason - two stubborn jackasses in one day was enough to try anyone's patience. "I don't know why I bother trying to keep any semblance of balance in this bloody group," the rogue sighed as she turned on her heel and walked away to give Fenris another talking to. Because, damn it to the Void, couldn't he make nice for ten minutes?
